The weather for the past month has been unseasonably warm and a perfect time for a weekend trip to Avalon and Stone Harbor. The monarch butterflies are making their passage southward through Cape May County, and have been spotted in large numbers resting on trees, shrubs, and dunes. Join the Monarchs and return to Seven Mile Island and enjoy a stroll on the beach.

bridge replacement. Last spring the bridge's substructure was repaired and the bridge has been open since the repairs were completed. The bridge is now 78 years old; the structure was built for truck weights weighing up to 17.5 tons. Trucks today average 40 tons, according to the Dale Foster, a Cape May County Engineer. The study is looking into replacing some of the seven sections of the bridge. The study will examine the cost effectiveness of a span by span replacement.

Throwing Shade for Beach Tents, Cabanas and Canopies - Many beach lovers have been complaining about the oversized tents on the beach. Are the large canopies blocking the water views for not only beach goers but also lifeguards? Shore towns up and down the coast have been considering this hot-button topic. Avon-by-the-Sea, Belmar, Long Beach and Seaside Heights have recently passed ordinances to regulate or ban large tents.

Stone Harbor Borough Council has debated the issue of "beach spreading". Opinions do vary. Some speculate that, without any regulation, more tents will be pitched in the towns that allow them. A beach tag is an admission pass to beach access and a change in regulation would be a potential deterrent to the beach not being overtaken by portable popup tents. Some parents like the protection from aggressive seagulls in search of food as well as well as overexposure to the sun. No regulations are being imposed at this time but mandates under consideration are that all tents have open sides and maintain adequate spacing from other tents, as well as determining size and distance standards from the water line.

Welcome Walter - Come visit the Cape May County Park & Zoo and meet Walter, the new baby Bactrian camel with two humps. He is now 6 months old and comes from the foothill of the Himalayas. This camel is considered an endangered species, with only 1,000 left in existence.

Save the Date - Special Events - The Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Kids' Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 28th from 11 am - 4 pm. The event will include fall crafts, free hayrides, fun activities and trick or treating through the shops at the downtown shopping district. Come to see the creepy, crawly, and cute costumes!

The Avalon Recreation Department presents "Trunk of Treat" on Saturday, October 28th from 5-7 pm, featuring a car decorating contest, pumpkin decorating and hay rides on the beach plus funnel cake, cotton candy and caramel apples. Come to the 29th Street Parking Lot by 4:45 pm sharp.
